Chaos erupted along the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway yesterday as operators of popular Korope minibuses staged a protest, blocking traffic around the Ajah axis and leaving thousands of commuters stranded for hours. The demonstration, which drew swift police intervention, was in response to the Lagos State Government’s restriction on unregulated minibus operations on the corridor, a move officials describe as essential for modernizing the state’s transport system.

According to eyewitness accounts and reports, the protesters parked their vehicles across the expressway, halting movement and causing massive gridlock that affected residents, workers, and businesses in the area. Videos circulating online showed frustrated motorists abandoning their cars, while some passengers were reportedly forced out of other buses amid the disruption. This isn’t the first time such tensions have boiled over; a similar protest occurred in January, with drivers and locals in Ajah voicing opposition to the ban on Korope buses in Eti-Osa Local Government.

In a strongly worded rejoinder signed by Sola Giwa, Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state government expressed disappointment over the action, labeling it as an unfortunate disruption despite prior awareness of the policy. “The attention of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has been drawn to reports of a protest by operators of Korope minibuses which temporarily obstructed movement along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, particularly around the Ajah axis,” the statement read.

Giwa emphasized that the Lekki-Epe corridor has officially become a Mass Transit and Regulated Transport Corridor under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), a data-driven plan aligned with Lagos’ vision for efficient mobility. “This transition is deliberate, data-driven, and in alignment with the State’s long-term vision for a safer, more efficient, and economically viable transport ecosystem,” he stated. The restriction, he added, followed extensive stakeholder engagements, including consultations with transport unions, operators, and associations, as well as public advisories issued well in advance.

The government’s push to phase out Korope from major highways stems from broader reforms announced in December 2025, aiming to replace small, unregulated buses with higher-capacity, regulated services on routes like Ajah-CMS, Ajah-Oshodi, and Ajah-Berger. Officials argue that allowing unregulated operations risks compromising traffic flow, safety, and the progress made on this key economic artery, which connects residential areas, commercial hubs, the Free Trade Zone, and maritime facilities.

Critics, however, including some drivers, claim the reforms favor larger bus operators and could displace livelihoods. One report suggested the protest was against the alleged takeover of routes by new buses linked to influential figures, though the government has dismissed such claims as unfounded. “We are not against progress, but how do we feed our families if we’re pushed off the roads without alternatives?” a protesting driver told local media during the blockade.

The Nigeria Police Force, led by the Lagos State Commissioner, quickly stepped in to restore order, with Giwa commending their efforts. “Through the CP, I engaged directly with the Area Commanders covering the Lekki–Epe corridor, and assurances have been given regarding heightened enforcement, proactive patrol, and sustained vigilance to prevent any further breakdown of law and order,” the adviser noted.

Reaffirming its stance, the Lagos State Government outlined its commitments under the BRI:

  • Structured mass transit operations
  • Orderly and regulated transport systems
  • Protection of lives and property
  • Zero tolerance for actions capable of disrupting public peace

Giwa urged operators to comply with the regulations and participate in the formal system, warning that disruptions to public infrastructure would not be tolerated. “Lawful engagement remains welcome. However, disruption of public infrastructure will not be tolerated,” he stressed.

As Lagos continues its transport overhaul, experts say the reforms could reduce congestion and improve safety, but only if inclusive alternatives are provided for affected drivers. For now, commuters along Lekki-Epe hope for lasting peace on one of the city’s most vital routes.
