7 Reasons HND Graduates Should Avoid PGD In Nigeria

For many HND graduates in Nigeria, enrolling for a Postgraduate Diploma seems like the fastest way to bridge the gap between HND and BSc. While this looks attractive on the surface, PGD is often not the best path.

Below are seven strong reasons why HND graduates should think twice before choosing PGD.

1. PGD Does Not Fully Remove HND Discrimination

One major reason people go for PGD is to escape the long standing discrimination against HND holders. Sadly, PGD does not completely solve this problem. Many employers and institutions still treat PGD holders as HND graduates, especially when recruitment policies clearly state BSc or equivalent. In many cases, PGD is seen as an add on, not a replacement for a degree.

2. PGD Has Limited Value In The Job Market

In the Nigerian job market, PGD does not carry strong weight. Employers usually focus more on first degrees. When two candidates apply, one with a BSc and another with HND plus PGD, the BSc holder is often preferred. This makes the time and money spent on PGD less rewarding.

3. You May Still Be Barred From Certain Opportunities

Even after completing PGD, some opportunities remain closed. Certain government agencies, international organisations and scholarships still insist on a first degree. PGD holders are often told they do not meet the basic requirement. This can be frustrating after investing so much effort.

4. PGD Is Costly With Low Long Term Benefit

PGD programmes are expensive. Tuition fees, accommodation, books and transport all add up. When you compare this cost with the actual benefit, many graduates realise the return on investment is low. Spending that same money on a direct degree conversion or professional certification may bring better results.

5. PGD Is Often A Dead End Academically

Academically, PGD does not always open many doors. Some universities still restrict PGD holders from certain masters programmes or demand additional conditions. This means you may still face delays and extra requirements even after finishing PGD.

6. Direct Degree Options Are Now Available

Today, there are better alternatives for HND graduates. Many Nigerian like Kwara State University (KWASU), Joseph Ayo Bababola University (JABU), Federal University, oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and foreign institutions now offer direct top up degree programmes. These options allow HND holders to earn a BSc within a reasonable time. This route gives clearer recognition and wider acceptance than PGD.

7. PGD Can Waste Valuable Time

Time is very important. PGD usually takes one year or more. After that, you may still need extra years to pursue a masters or qualify fully. In contrast, a direct degree conversion can place you on a stronger academic and career path faster. Wasting years on PGD can delay your growth.

PGD is not completely useless, but for many HND graduates in Nigeria, it is not the smartest choice. The discrimination remains, the value is limited, and better options now exist. Before enrolling, it is important to look beyond quick fixes and choose a path that truly improves your career and future.
