The Labour Party has firmly rejected claims by Abayomi Arabambi that it has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party described Arabambi’s comments as misleading and without basis. Arabambi, who claimed during a recent television interview that key party figures including Abia Governor Alex Otti had agreed to back Tinubu, was immediately disowned by the leadership.
Comrade Abubakar Yawale, Sokoto State Chairman of the Labour Party and Chairman of the Northern Labour Party Chairmen Forum, said Arabambi is an expelled member with no right to speak for the party. “Arabambi is an expelled member and has no authority whatsoever to speak for or on behalf of the Labour Party,” the statement stressed.
The party made clear it has taken no decision to support Tinubu’s re-election bid. “The Labour Party has not taken any decision to support President Tinubu’s second-term ambition. Such a claim is false, unfounded, and should be completely disregarded,” it added.
NaijaChoice News reports that the party remains committed to its role as a strong opposition force. It said it will continue to offer Nigerians a credible alternative vision for governance ahead of the 2027 polls.
On former presidential candidate Peter Obi, the statement described him as a respected figure who is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress. It acknowledged his constitutional right to pursue his ambitions on any platform and wished him well.
The party also highlighted its rich pool of leaders. “Labour Party is not short of capable leaders. The Party has numerous competent and credible aspirants ready to contest for the presidency under its platform,” the statement noted.
Leadership of the party rests with Distinguished Senator Nenadi Esther Usman. Only decisions from recognised organs of the party are binding, Yawale emphasised.
The public has been urged to ignore Arabambi’s remarks. “The public is strongly advised to ignore the baseless and self-serving statements of Abayomi Arabambi. The Labour Party remains united, focused, and committed to the Nigerian people,” the statement concluded.
