Nollywood star Yul Edochie has taken to social media to slam Arise Television presenter Rufai Oseni, accusing him of hypocrisy and poor journalistic ethics in a video that has sparked widespread debate online. The actor, known for his outspoken views on politics and society, questioned Oseni’s right to grill political figures on national TV, citing a infamous traffic violation incident from years back.
In the trending clip, Edochie did not hold back as he referenced the 2022 event where Oseni was caught driving on a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane in Lagos. “Is this not the same Rufai Oseni that was caught driving on BRT lane?” Edochie asked rhetorically. He claimed that when traffic officials confronted the broadcaster, Oseni responded with arrogance, shouting, “Do you know who I am? I’m going to call the governor of Lagos State.” According to Edochie, Oseni only issued a public apology after a video of the altercation went viral, adding, “If not because somebody had a video, you could not even apologise. If there was no video, what would have happened?“
The BRT incident, which occurred in August 2022, involved Oseni being fined N70,000 for the violation and allegedly assaulting a police officer during the confrontation. Oseni later addressed the matter on air, admitting his fault and apologizing to the public and law enforcement. However, Edochie argued that this episode undermines Oseni’s credibility to hold others accountable, especially in his role as a hard-hitting interviewer on Arise TV’s Morning Show.

Edochie’s criticism extended to Oseni’s on-air demeanor, labeling him as “very disrespectful.” He accused the anchor of making guests uncomfortable during interviews and failing to show basic courtesy. “How can you invite somebody and make the guest uncomfortable?” Edochie queried. “If a guest is not comfortable, the first thing you do is apologise and make the guest feel at ease. How can you tell a guest that if they’re not comfortable, they are free to walk out of the studio?” He further blasted Oseni’s style as unprofessional, stating, “You are insulting people on national TV. You’re a very disrespectful person. That is not journalism.”
Shifting to politics, Edochie defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against critics like Oseni, urging Nigerians to show respect for the office. “Jagaban President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the President of Nigeria, whether you like it or not. He is our President, you must respect him,” he declared. “The man just came in. Give him time. Rome was not built in a day.” This comes amid ongoing economic challenges under Tinubu’s administration, with voices like Oseni often pressing government officials on issues such as inflation and security.
The video, shared widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some users sided with Edochie, praising his candor. For instance, one X post from @DanielRegha echoed the sentiment, calling Oseni unprofessional and noting, “Rufai lacks manners & isn’t a professional when it comes to journalism.” Others, however, turned the tables on Edochie, highlighting his own personal controversies, including his polygamous marriage. A user @Obygrace4 humorously noted, “This is hilarious, 😂 see as men want to use mouth finish Yul Edochie after he made video about Rufai Oseni, preaching about integrity 😂😢😂.“
As of now, neither Rufai Oseni nor Arise TV has responded to Edochie’s remarks. The actor’s video continues to gain traction, fueling discussions on media ethics, celebrity influence in politics, and the boundaries of journalistic accountability in Nigeria.
