Social media commentator Daniel Regha has ignited fresh political conversations online following reports that Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to reports from Adamawa State, Abba Abubakar recently joined the ruling APC and publicly declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected re-election bid in 2027. The move has attracted widespread attention due to its political implications, especially amid growing speculation that Atiku Abubakar is positioning himself to contest the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Reacting to the development, Daniel Regha took to social media to question the significance of the defection, suggesting it reflected deeper political realities.

His post quickly gained traction, triggering heated reactions from Nigerians across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook, with opinions sharply divided along political and generational lines.

While some users interpreted the defection as a sign of internal disagreement within Atiku’s camp, others dismissed it as a calculated political strategy.

A user identified as Maximum commented that leadership credibility begins at home, adding that public rejection by family members raises serious questions. Celestine, however, argued that the move could simply reflect Abba Abubakar’s attempt to carve out his own political identity.

Others drew parallels with political developments in other countries, while some suggested the defection might be part of a long-term political chess game rather than outright opposition to his father’s ambition.

Another commentator noted that political affiliations within families are not unusual, comparing the situation to religious differences among family members.

The reported defection comes at a critical time as opposition figures intensify consultations and coalition talks ahead of the next general election. Analysts say the move, whether symbolic or strategic, underscores the complex dynamics shaping Nigeria’s political landscape as 2027 approaches.

Atiku Abubakar responded to the report with a post on X (formerly Twitter)

The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal.

In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.
As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.

What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.

I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress. -AA he wrote.
