Tragedy struck the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Saturday when a female officer was crushed to death by an operational patrol van during a tactical show of force exercise in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
NaijaChoice News gathered that the incident happened during a coordinated simulation drill by the corps’ Female Strike Force, also known as the Female Squad, where officers were demonstrating convoy manoeuvres and operational movements in an open area near NSCDC facilities.
A viral video, now circulating widely on social media, captured the heartbreaking moment: a black operational van marked “Female Squad” with red wheels made a sharp turn during the exercise and ran over the officer, pinning her underneath its tyres. Colleagues and bystanders immediately rushed to the scene, physically lifting the heavy vehicle to free the trapped officer before emergency responders evacuated her in an ambulance. Despite the swift response, she did not survive.

Confirming the sad development, NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale told journalists in a telephone interview that the corps had indeed lost a personnel in the simulation exercise.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” Babawale stated.

He added that the agency has commenced internal processes and would soon issue a detailed official statement to explain the circumstances and outline measures being taken.
The identity of the deceased officer has not been publicly released as at the time of filing this report, pending formal notification of her family.
The show of force exercise was part of routine tactical demonstrations by the Female Strike Force, a special unit trained for high-risk operations and special assignments. Eyewitness accounts suggest the officer may have fallen or been knocked down during the fast-paced manoeuvre, possibly from an unsecured door or coordination lapse in the convoy.
NaijaChoice News understands that the unfortunate incident has sent shockwaves through the NSCDC community, with many officers expressing grief over the loss of their colleague during what was meant to be a routine display of readiness.
As the corps mourns, questions are already being raised about safety protocols during such high-intensity drills. The agency is expected to provide more clarity in its forthcoming statement, even as senior officials visit the family of the deceased to offer condolences.
