It was a moment of deep reflection and national pride on Monday as Nigeria marked the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day at the National Arcade in Abuja.
The ceremony, held in honour of the country’s fallen heroes, brought together top government officials, military leaders, and families of deceased soldiers, all united by one purpose — to remember those who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the wreath-laying on behalf of the Federal Government.

The presence of key national figures added weight to the occasion. The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, were all in attendance. Ministers, service chiefs, and other senior government officials were also present.
From the early hours of the morning, the National Arcade was filled with uniformed officers, veterans, and families quietly taking their seats. The mood was sober. There was no noise, no politics — just remembrance.
Prayers were offered, wreaths were laid, and moments of silence were observed as the nation honoured soldiers who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity.
For many families, the day was emotional. Some stood quietly with folded arms, others wiped away tears. But there was also pride — pride that their loved ones served the nation to the end.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is not just a ceremony. It is a reminder that the peace many Nigerians enjoy today came at a cost. It is a day to remember that behind every uniform is a human being, and behind every fallen soldier is a family.
As the bugle sounded and the ceremony drew to a close, one thing was clear: Nigeria has not forgotten her heroes. And she never should.
