In a significant boost for Nigeria’s premier institution, the University of Ibadan (UI) has reclaimed its position as the country’s leading university in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026. The rankings, released on Thursday, place UI in the global 801–1000 band, making it Nigeria’s highest-ranked varsity and dethroning previous frontrunners like Covenant University. This marks a triumphant return for UI, which last held the top Nigerian spot in 2023 before slipping to fourth in 2025.

The achievement comes amid celebrations from the UI community, with the university’s management hailing it as a reaffirmation of its status as Nigeria’s foremost tertiary institution. In an official statement, UI noted that out of 51 Nigerian universities featured in the rankings, only UI and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) made it into the global top 1000, with UI positioned ahead overall. “The status of the University of Ibadan, not just as the first university in Nigeria but the best, has been re-established,” the statement read, emphasizing the institution’s enduring legacy.

However, UNILAG also celebrated the feat, claiming a shared first-place ranking in Nigeria alongside UI. According to UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the university’s performance reflects the hard work of its staff, students, and stakeholders. “UNILAG leads, others follow,” one commenter enthused on social media, while alumni expressed pride in the institution’s consistent excellence.

The 2026 THE rankings evaluated 2,191 universities from 115 countries using 18 performance indicators across five pillars: teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), research quality (30%), industry (4%), and international outlook (7.5%). Data was drawn from over 174.9 million citations in 18.7 million research publications and survey responses from more than 108,000 scholars worldwide.

Among Nigerian highlights, UNILAG boasted the highest research quality score at 66.7, while Bayero University Kano led in international outlook with 49.6. Covenant University excelled in industry engagement with a score of 55.7, underscoring its strong ties with the private sector. Despite these strengths, experts note ongoing challenges for Nigerian universities in global competitiveness, with many placed in lower bands due to funding issues, infrastructure gaps, and limited research output.

Nigeria’s presence in the rankings grew to 24 institutions this year, up from 21 in 2025, signaling gradual progress in higher education. Social media reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with users praising UI’s resurgence. “UI has collected it again!” one Facebook user commented, while another lamented not affording to attend the historic institution.
