In a stunning escalation of international tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has linked his aggressive push for control over Greenland to his frustration at being denied the Nobel Peace Prize. In a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump declared that he no longer feels an “obligation to think purely of Peace,” citing the prize snub as a reason to prioritize American interests, including a potential forceful takeover of the Arctic island. This comes amid Trump’s announcement of tariffs on several NATO allies opposing the move, sparking vows of pushback from European nations and accusations of blackmail from the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
The controversy erupted after Trump announced on January 17 that the U.S. would impose a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting February 1, escalating to 25% by June 1, unless a deal is reached for the “Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.” Trump justified the tariffs as retaliation against these countries for participating in joint military exercises in Greenland, which he claims undermine U.S. security interests in the Arctic. He has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic location is vital to counter threats from Russia and China, stating, “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”
Trump’s letter to Støre, which was forwarded to multiple European ambassadors in Washington, was a direct response to a joint message from Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb urging de-escalation over proposed tariffs on European countries. In the missive, Trump wrote: “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT.”

Støre, speaking to Norwegian newspaper VG, described the letter as arriving shortly after their plea for dialogue. “We pointed out the need to de-escalate the exchange of words and requested a phone call between Trump, Stubb and me during the day,” he said. He reiterated Norway’s support for Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing that the Norwegian government has no role in the Nobel Peace Prize process, which is handled by an independent committee. Experts interviewed by VG labeled the letter a “blatant attempt to blackmail” Europe, with one commentator remarking, “The stupidity is so great that you hardly know where to begin.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has accused Trump of blackmail, pointing to his conflation of the prize with Norwegian state policy. Trump has long claimed he deserved the award for various diplomatic achievements, including what he describes as stopping eight wars, though critics dispute these claims.
In response, the targeted NATO countries issued a joint statement affirming their solidarity: “As members of NATO, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise ‘Arctic Endurance’ conducted with Allies, responds to this necessity. It poses no threat to anyone. We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process begun last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that we stand firmly behind. Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.”
The announcement has triggered widespread protests in Greenland and Denmark, with thousands marching under slogans like “Hands off Greenland” and “Yankee, Go Home.” In Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, demonstrators braved freezing temperatures to oppose what they see as an imperialistic threat. European leaders have condemned the tariffs as “unacceptable,” warning of a potential “downward spiral” in transatlantic relations.
Trump’s fixation on Greenland dates back to his first term, but this iteration includes explicit threats of force if negotiations fail. He has stated, “One way or the other, we are going to have Greenland,” and emphasized that the U.S. would acquire it to prevent Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has backed the move, arguing Europe will eventually understand the strategic necessity. However, former Vice President Mike Pence expressed concerns over the strategy’s constitutionality.
From a global perspective, Russia’s foreign ministry has said it is monitoring the situation closely, while China has hit back at U.S. accusations of Arctic ambitions. Analysts warn that this dispute could fracture NATO, with some describing Trump’s approach as “state gangsterism” that normalizes land grabs.
As tensions mount, a U.S. congressional delegation visited Denmark to ease relations, but Trump’s unyielding stance suggests the crisis is far from resolved. For Africa, including Nigeria, the fallout could affect global trade and security dynamics, given NATO’s role in international stability.
