on Iran on February 28, 2026, targeting military bases, oil storage facilities in Tehran and other strategic sites across the country. The operation, which reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader and triggered retaliatory missile strikes, has escalated into a full-scale conflict now entering its second week.
Pfister made the strong declaration in an interview published on Sunday by the Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung. He explained that Switzerland’s governing body, the Federal Council, firmly believes the strikes carried out against Iran go against international legal rules.
“Our government believes the attack on Iran violates international law,” Pfister said. He added that the action conflicts with rules that prohibit the use of force between states. “The Americans and Israel have attacked Iran from the air. In doing so, they, like Iran, have violated international law.”
The Swiss defence minister also called on all sides involved in the conflict to immediately stop fighting in order to protect civilians. He stressed that his comments apply to any country that breaks the rule against the use of force, including the United States and Israel.
Pfister further warned that the escalating war could spill over into Europe, not just through direct military involvement but via asymmetric threats. “There is a risk of terrorist attacks in Switzerland. In addition, the war could trigger a wave of refugees that will also reach us,” he stated.
His position echoes growing concerns across Europe. Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil, recently expressed serious doubts about whether the attacks are legally justified under international law. He warned that the world could face a dangerous situation if international rules stop being respected.
“There is a risk that we could move into a world without rules,” Klingbeil said.
Meanwhile, Spain has also criticised the bombing of Iran by the United States and Israel, describing the strikes as reckless and contrary to international law.
Pfister’s remarks come as satellite images continue to show extensive damage to Iranian military and oil infrastructure, with thick smoke rising over Tehran and other cities. The Swiss government, traditionally neutral, has now joined other European voices urging de-escalation and a return to diplomacy to prevent further civilian casualties and regional instability.
