President Trump’s Religious Adviser, Sameerah Munshi Resigns

Sameerah Munshi, the only Muslim adviser serving on President Donald Trump’s White House Religious Liberty Commission, has resigned in protest over what she described as injustices and atrocities by the administration both at home and abroad.

Munshi, appointed by Trump in 2025, made the announcement on her X account late on March 13, 2026, posting a full statement that quickly drew widespread attention across global media. She cited two major triggers: the removal of Catholic commissioner Carrie Prejean Boller for expressing faith-based views on Palestine, and the United States’ military engagement in Iran, which she labelled an illegal war launched without congressional authorisation.

In her resignation letter, Munshi stated: “Today, I am resigning over the injustice and atrocities of this administration at home and abroad. I resign in protest of two deeply troubling developments: the official removal of Carrie Prejean Boller for her deeply held beliefs about Palestine and the federal government’s illegal war against Iran, undertaken without clear constitutional or congressional authorization.”

She revealed that members of the commission had mocked her Islamic faith and shown hostility toward American Muslims, yet she had accepted the role hoping to champion religious liberty for all, including sidelined Muslim voices. Munshi traced her commitment to her family’s Christian and Muslim roots, noting they fled religious persecution to find safety in America. “Muslims and other people of faith are freer in America to practice their religion than almost any other place in the world,” she wrote, adding that she could no longer remain silent as free expression on Palestine was suppressed to advance what she called a Zionist political agenda.

The ousting of Prejean Boller occurred in February 2026 after a heated commission hearing on antisemitism. The former Miss California USA, who had converted to Catholicism, wore a Palestinian flag pin and defended dissenting positions, prompting her removal by commission chair Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. Trump later made the termination official. Munshi argued this move directly violated the very principles of religious liberty the commission was meant to uphold.

Equally damning in her view is the US-led military action against Iran that began on February 28, 2026, in coordination with Israel. Critics, including Munshi, insist the operation lacks congressional approval, violates the Constitution’s war powers clause, and has resulted in civilian deaths, including children, funded by American taxpayers. Public opposition has grown steadily, with many questioning the administration’s disregard for both domestic religious freedoms and international norms.

Munshi made clear her decision was not driven by fear or external pressure. “I am not resigning out of fear or intimidation from anyone affiliated with the Commission, the government, or any interest group,” she emphasised. “I support America over Israel, and unfortunately that means I cannot support Trump or this government.”

She concluded by seeking divine forgiveness: “Ultimately, I will have to stand before God and answer to Him for my role in this commission. I ask His forgiveness if I have legitimized their evil or the evil of this administration in any way.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) swiftly commended both Munshi and the ousted Prejean Boller for their courage in defending religious liberty against what the group described as selective enforcement. The development has sparked fresh debate in Washington about the direction of Trump’s second-term policies on faith, foreign intervention, and Middle East alliances.

NaijaChoice News reports that Munshi’s exit leaves the Religious Liberty Commission without its sole Muslim voice at a time when global scrutiny on US actions in Iran continues to intensify. Her resignation underscores deepening rifts within advisory bodies tasked with protecting America’s founding ideals of faith and freedom.
