Kenyan detectives have arrested two suspected drug traffickers, one of them a Nigerian national, in a swift intelligence-led operation that has sent shockwaves through cross-border narcotics networks.

The suspects, Okeke Ikechukwu, a Nigerian national, and Alex Opondo, a Kenyan national, were nabbed on Sunday during a search at a house within Mbuti Apartment in Ruaka, Kiambu County.

Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), working in collaboration with officers from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), trailed the duo after receiving credible intelligence that they were planning a major narcotics exchange in Syokimau, Machakos County.

“Acting on credible intelligence that suspects were planning a narcotics exchange in Syokimau, Machakos County, the team responded swiftly. However, upon arrival, it was established that the planned meeting had been aborted,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed.

With the meeting cancelled, the operatives quickly redirected their focus to Ruaka based on fresh real-time intelligence from covert sources. There, they stormed the Mbuti Apartment hideout and pounced on the suspects.

The operation yielded a haul of incriminating exhibits including pellets and packages of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, digital weighing scales, several mobile phones, foreign passports, and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the recovered items have been secured for forensic analysis as authorities work to unravel the full extent of the transnational smuggling ring.

The duo are currently being held at Ruaraka and Pangani Police Stations ahead of their arraignment in court today, Monday.

Investigations are ongoing to trace and apprehend other members of the syndicate, with the DCI vowing to dismantle the entire narcotics network operating across Kenya and beyond.

This latest bust underscores the growing collaboration between Kenyan security agencies in tackling drug trafficking involving foreign nationals, a menace that has continued to plague East Africa.
