Lionel Messi has etched his name deeper into football lore by hitting exactly 900 top-level career goals.
The 38-year-old Argentina star struck in the seventh minute of Inter Miami’s Concacaf Champions Cup last-16 second leg against Nashville SC on Wednesday, becoming only the second player in men’s football history to reach the mark.
NaijaChoice News reports that the goal came at Inter Miami’s home stadium and sent fans into wild celebration as the MLS side took an early lead.
Since arriving in the United States in June 2023, Messi has delivered 81 goals in 92 appearances for Inter Miami. Those strikes helped the club claim the Leagues Cup and MLS Cup titles while turning the franchise into a global attraction.
Before Miami, the forward spent 17 years at Barcelona, scoring 672 goals in 778 games and winning 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and multiple other trophies. His two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain added 32 more goals in 75 matches alongside Neymar and Mbappé.
On the international stage, Messi has 115 goals in 196 caps for Argentina, including the 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar that cemented his legacy.
Opta statistics show Messi scored 755 of his 900 goals with his left foot, 111 with his right, 30 with his head and four classified as others. He netted 724 from inside the box and 176 from outside, including 112 penalties and 70 free-kicks.
His most frequent victims include Sevilla with 25 goals, followed by Athletic Club, Atlético Madrid, Valencia, Real Madrid and Levante.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s longtime rival, became the first to hit 900 goals in September 2024 for Portugal. The 41-year-old has since added more strikes to reach 965 in total across club and country.
Pele famously claimed over 1,000 goals, but official records credit him with 778. Fellow Brazilian Romario sits on 785.
Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano, who played alongside Messi at Barcelona and for Argentina, described the milestone as “insane”.
The former Liverpool and West Ham star, now 41, said he feels privileged to have witnessed so many of the goals up close, both as teammate and coach. “Leo is one of a kind,” Mascherano told reporters.
Messi also holds the record for most goals in a calendar year with 91 in 2012 and became the fastest player to 100 Champions League goals in just 123 games.
Across Nigeria, where Messi commands a huge following among football-crazy youths, fans and local media outlets have flooded social platforms with tributes. Many see the record as fresh proof that dedication and talent can conquer any stage, from La Liga to MLS.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to inspire the next generation of Nigerian talents dreaming of similar glory.
