In a strategic move to harness the potentials of the Nigerian diaspora for state development, Olumide Kola-Lawal, Founder of the Nigerian Professionals Network and Lagos Central Senatorial Aspirant, hosted Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, in Washington, DC, on February 3, 2026. The event, part of the Network’s flagship “Nurturing Nigeria’s Future” series, focused on investment opportunities, security enhancements, and the state’s recent political shifts.

The high-level dialogue was streamed live across six countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, South Africa, Nigeria, and the United States, drawing Nigerian diaspora professionals, investors, development experts, and public policy leaders. Governor Mutfwang, in his address, positioned Plateau State as “Nigeria’s next frontier for sustainable growth and peaceful prosperity,” outlining a roadmap centered on economic revitalization, improved security, social cohesion, and inclusive development.

“Plateau is open for business, open for ideas, and open for partnership,” Mutfwang declared. “We are building a state where security, transparency, and opportunity work together to unlock prosperity for our people and confidence for investors at home and abroad.”

Security Reforms Take Center Stage

Addressing lingering concerns about peace and security in the state, the Governor highlighted significant improvements in community safety and intercommunal relations since taking office. He credited these advancements to coordinated security diplomacy, intelligence-led operations, and ongoing engagements with traditional and religious leaders.

“Our strategy goes beyond enforcement,” Mutfwang explained. “We are tackling insecurity by expanding economic opportunity and strengthening dialogue. Security must be preventive and people-centered.” During his US visit, Mutfwang also met with US lawmaker Riley Moore to discuss strategies for addressing the ongoing insecurity crisis in Northern Nigeria, emphasizing bilateral cooperation on economic and security fronts.

The Governor announced the recruitment of 1,000 Plateau youths into forest and community protection initiatives, aimed at bolstering surveillance, creating employment, and protecting lives and livelihoods. However, critics have pointed out persistent challenges, including militia activities and reprisal attacks in areas like Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu, urging a more inclusive approach to security.

Economic Transformation Agenda

On the economic front, Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s reforms, noting enhancements in the ease of doing business and rising investor confidence. Key hospitality projects, such as the renovation of the Hill Station Hotel and Plateau Hotel, are underway to boost tourism and economic activity.

The state is also advancing urban mobility with plans for modern transportation and rail infrastructure. In agriculture, partnerships with the Netherlands have expanded productivity, particularly in Irish potato farming, now branded as “Plateau Potatoes.” Livestock development is being prioritized to diversify the agricultural value chain.

Political Realignment for Development

Governor Mutfwang discussed Plateau State’s recent switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a strategic choice driven by development interests rather than partisanship. As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the defection, formalized in a grand rally on January 27, 2026, has led to improved political stability, reduced rancor, and stronger federal collaboration.

This realignment has accelerated projects like the reconstruction of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe corridor, a vital economic link. Mutfwang emphasized that the move fosters teamwork and loyalty within the new political family, positioning Plateau as the “jewel of the savannah” and a prime investment destination.

Strengthening Diaspora Ties

Recognizing the diaspora’s role in development, the Governor committed to structured engagements, leveraging capital, expertise, and networks from abroad. He announced a major diaspora homecoming initiative in 2027 to reconnect talent with opportunities and showcase investment prospects.

Throughout the session, Mutfwang stressed unity and inclusion, advocating for greater devolution of powers, especially in security, to empower subnational governments. “Development must carry everyone along,” he said. “When citizens feel included, societies flourish.”

Event convener Olumide Kola-Lawal praised the Governor’s vision, calling the engagement timely and impactful. The dialogue ended with calls for sustained collaboration and follow-up mechanisms to turn discussions into tangible investments and projects.

This event underscores Plateau State’s push for progress amid Nigeria’s evolving political and economic landscape, with diaspora partnerships at the forefront.
