Plumbers summoned to fix a stubborn blockage at the Naraguta female hostel of the University of Jos stumbled upon a newborn baby lodged inside the pipes on Wednesday.
Students had complained for days that toilets in the hostel were unusable. Water refused to flush properly and foul smells filled the corridors, leaving many residents helpless.
Authorities quickly brought in a team of plumbers after the situation worsened. The workers broke open sections of the sewage line during what sources described as routine renovation work and made the horrifying find.
A female undergraduate reportedly gave birth in secret inside the hostel and flushed the infant down the toilet. The tiny body got stuck, triggering the total blockage.
The University of Jos management has since sealed off the affected area. Security operatives have been drafted in as investigation continues.
NaijaChoice News gathered that no official statement has been released by the institution yet. However, multiple eyewitness accounts and student posts confirm the grim recovery.
This incident has sparked fresh conversations on campus about the pressures facing young female students. Many are calling for better counselling services and support systems to prevent such tragedies.
As at press time, the identity of the mother remains unknown. Police and university officials are working round the clock to unravel the full circumstances.
