FIFA & UEFA Pressure Saves Palestinian Kids’ Football Pitch in West Bank Refugee Camp – Israel Halts Demolition Order!

In a dramatic last-minute intervention driven by global football giants FIFA and UEFA, Israeli authorities have suspended the planned demolition of a vital soccer field in the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. The move comes after intense diplomatic pressure from top officials, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, and the Swiss Ambassador to Israel, Simon Geissbühler.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued the demolition order on December 31, 2025, declaring the pitch — the only football field in the camp — an illegal structure built too close to the West Bank separation barrier, posing a security risk. Residents of the camp were given just one week to tear it down themselves or face bills for the IDF’s demolition costs. The field, constructed around 2020-2021 in Area C (under full Israeli civil control), serves over 200 young players, including girls who have represented Palestine at youth international levels.

Aida refugee camp, established in 1950 for Palestinians displaced during the 1948 war, houses around 7,244 refugees in a cramped 0.071 square kilometer area. The pitch provided a rare safe space for children amid occupation hardships. Local administrator Mohammad Abu Srour of the Aida Youth Centre voiced deep frustration: “The Israelis don’t want us to have any kind of hope, they don’t want us to have any opportunity… The moment that we lose hope and opportunity we are going to leave.”

Young players expressed heartbreak. Ten-year-old Naya said, “We don’t have anywhere else to play. We are building our dreams here. If they demolish our field, they will demolish our dreams.” Another child, Mohammed, added he was “upset” because “this is a field I really care for.”

The turnaround followed urgent appeals. UEFA’s Čeferin reportedly held three telephone conversations with Israel Football Association (IFA) Chairman Moshe “Shino” Zuares (a UEFA executive committee member), who relayed concerns to Israeli security officials. FIFA’s Infantino engaged through the Swiss government, prompting Ambassador Geissbühler to contact the IDF’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories and Central Command.

UEFA issued a statement thanking Zuares “for his efforts to help protect the site from demolition” and expressed hope the pitch would “continue to serve the local community as a safe space for children and youth.” On Tuesday, the IDF designated the demolition as “non-urgent,” freezing the order and shifting it to Israeli political and legal forums.

The IDF maintained its position: “Along the [separation] barrier, there is a seizure order and a construction ban, and therefore the construction in the area was carried out illegally. The matter … is being discussed in the relevant legal forums.” Palestinians counter that they received verbal permission earlier and highlight the irony of restrictions in an already confined refugee space.

This intervention comes amid heightened scrutiny of Israeli football. Five IFA-registered teams play in the West Bank, drawing criticism for alleged violations of international law following the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion in July 2024 and a UN rights committee decision on October 18, 2024, calling for Israel to return to pre-1967 borders.

The timing aligns closely with a key vote today (or very recently) in Switzerland’s Canton of Vaud, home to UEFA’s Nyon headquarters. Lawmakers, led by councillor Theophile Schenker, are pushing a resolution to challenge or revoke UEFA’s valuable tax-exempt status (estimated 15-30 million euros annually) over its continued cooperation with the IFA despite the ICJ ruling. Critics accuse UEFA of a double standard compared to its swift actions against Russia over Ukraine. The resolution could advance to national level if it passes with a simple majority.

Palestinian campaigners launched social media drives and a petition gathering hundreds of thousands of signatures to save the pitch, amplifying calls for international sports bodies to act. FIFA faces its own ongoing inquiries into Israeli league participation in occupied territories.

For Nigerians who follow the beautiful game passionately — from the Super Eagles to the English Premier League — this story underscores football’s power beyond the pitch. While the immediate threat to Aida’s young dreamers is paused, the broader occupation and settlement issues persist. Sports diplomacy has scored a small but symbolic goal here, offering hope that global pressure can protect innocent children’s right to play.
