FIFA Rejects Nigeria’s Appeal, Confirms DR Congo For Play-Off

The Super Eagles’ dream of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been shattered following FIFA’s confirmation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) as Africa’s sole representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.

The world football governing body released the final list of six participating nations on Wednesday via an accreditation notice sent to journalists ahead of the competition. The teams are Bolivia (CONMEBOL), DR Congo (CAF), Iraq (AFC), Jamaica (CONCACAF), New Caledonia (OFC), and Suriname (CONCACAF).

FIFA’s statement read: “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities. All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”

The inclusion of DR Congo effectively closes the door on any last-minute reprieve for Nigeria, whose Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had lodged a strong protest against the result of the CAF play-off tie in November 2025.

The Super Eagles had battled to a 1-1 draw with the Leopards in the decisive encounter before suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat on penalties. The NFF swiftly filed a formal appeal with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo deployed ineligible players—many of them Europe-based dual nationals who had switched allegiances—claiming they failed to meet full eligibility requirements under Congolese nationality laws, which reportedly restrict dual citizenship in certain contexts.

The protest sought to have the match result overturned, potentially awarding Nigeria the victory and securing their spot in the inter-continental play-offs. Despite the submission in December 2025 and ongoing reviews, FIFA’s latest move to confirm the line-up without any changes signals that the appeal has not succeeded in altering the qualification outcome.

The inter-confederation play-off tournament is set to kick off on March 26, 2026, in Mexico, with matches hosted in cities like Guadalajara and Monterrey. The format features two brackets of three teams each: one pathway pits New Caledonia against Jamaica, with the winner facing DR Congo, while the other sees Bolivia take on Suriname, with the victor meeting Iraq. The two bracket winners will earn the final berths at the expanded 48-team World Cup.

This development marks a major disappointment for Nigerian football, as the Super Eagles will miss consecutive World Cups for the first time since their debut appearance in 1994. Fans and analysts have expressed frustration over the qualification campaign, pointing to inconsistencies in performance during the African qualifiers.

The focus now shifts to DR Congo’s Leopards, who will aim to make history by reaching their first World Cup since 1974 (when they appeared as Zaire). Nigeria’s football authorities are yet to issue an official response to FIFA’s confirmation, but the decision brings an end to months of anticipation surrounding the eligibility dispute.

As the countdown to the March fixtures begins, attention turns to the battles in Mexico, where the remaining two tickets to North America will be decided. For Nigerian supporters, the wait for another World Cup opportunity now extends to future cycles.
