The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, signifying the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government. This comes as astronomical calculations and global Islamic calendars indicate that the 29 or 30-day fasting period, which began around February 17-18, 2026, is expected to conclude on the evening of Wednesday, March 18, paving the way for Eid prayers on Thursday.
In the official statement released on Tuesday through the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the fasting period.

Tunji-Ojo urged Muslims to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice, which were emphasised during the holy month of Ramadan. He also called on all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the continued peace, unity and prosperity of the country.
While wishing Muslim faithful a joyful Eid-ul-Fitr celebration, the minister encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in society. He added that the Federal Government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians.
The two-day break is expected to allow millions of Muslim faithful across the country to gather for Eid prayers at mosques, spend quality time with family and share in the spirit of charity that defines the festival. Markets, offices and schools will remain closed on both days, giving workers and students a well-deserved rest after the rigorous fasting season.
This year’s declaration follows the pattern of previous administrations under Minister Tunji-Ojo, who has consistently ensured timely announcements to enable smooth planning for the celebrations. As Nigerians prepare for the festivities, security agencies have been urged to remain vigilant to ensure a hitch-free holiday period.
