FG Clarifies US Troops in Nigeria: Deployment Limited to Intelligence Sharing, Training

The Federal Government has moved to douse tensions over the recent deployment of United States military personnel to Nigeria, emphasising that their role is strictly advisory and focused on intelligence support and training in the ongoing battle against terrorism and insurgency. This comes amid growing public discourse on the implications for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The clarification follows an announcement by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Tuesday, confirming the dispatch of a small team of American specialists to Nigeria. Speaking during a virtual press briefing from Dakar, Senegal, AFRICOM Commander, General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, described the move as a response to Nigeria’s request for “unique capabilities” that only the US can provide. “Our partnership with Nigeria is a great example of a willing and capable ally that requested unique capabilities only the United States can provide,” Anderson stated, highlighting the collaboration’s aim to augment Nigeria’s longstanding efforts against groups like Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The development stems from high-level discussions, including a meeting between General Anderson and President Bola Tinubu in Rome late last year, which paved the way for enhanced bilateral security ties. This cooperation escalated with joint US-Nigeria air interdiction operations on December 25, 2025, targeting terrorist hideouts in the North-West and North-Central regions, marking a renewed international push against violent extremism. Reports also indicate US intelligence-gathering flights over Nigeria, launched from bases in Ghana, as part of efforts to counter jihadist threats.

Addressing concerns in an interview with the BBC, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), reiterated that the US team comprises non-combat personnel dedicated to advisory roles in intelligence gathering and capacity building. He withheld specifics on the team’s size, arrival timeline, deployment locations, or duration, but assured that all operations remain under Nigerian control. “This is not about foreign combat troops; it’s about partnership to strengthen our security architecture,” Musa explained.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria, with some citizens voicing fears that external military presence could erode national independence. Social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), have buzzed with debates, as users like @dipoaina1 clarified that US involvement is limited to intelligence support, enabling Nigerian forces to conduct strikes, while @GraceHaven247 hailed it as “great news” for anti-terror efforts. Others, such as @StephenOSEMWEGI, framed it as a “Trump’s Presidential Surprise” against radical Islamist terrorists, underscoring the US administration’s focus on protecting vulnerable communities amid allegations of religious persecution—claims vehemently denied by Nigerian officials.

In response to these apprehensions, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has affirmed that the collaboration poses no threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty. During an appearance on ARISE Television on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, stressed the coordinated nature of the partnership. “What we know is that the US government and Nigerian authorities are working very closely to defeat terrorism in our country,” Morka said. He added, “Terrorism has brought immense pain and suffering to our people, with innocent citizens killed senselessly by these violent actors.”

Morka further dismissed notions of undue foreign intervention, noting that such concerns typically arise when host nations are sidelined—a scenario not applicable here. “This is a coordinated effort between the Nigerian government and the United States, with both sides fully involved in all decisions,” he asserted. “Whatever is agreed at the table is what will be implemented.” He emphasised President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorist threats and restoring peace nationwide.

Security analysts point out that this deployment represents the first official US military footprint in Nigeria since the Christmas Day airstrikes, amid broader Trump-era policies pressuring Abuja on human rights while bolstering counter-terrorism aid. Nigerian government spokesperson Daniel Bwala, in a related Sky News interview, described the December operations as a joint endeavour built on weeks of intelligence sharing, rejecting any ethnic or religious bias in targeting criminals.

As the fight against insurgency intensifies, stakeholders urge continued vigilance to ensure that international assistance aligns with Nigeria’s strategic interests. The Federal Government maintains that such partnerships are essential for dismantling terror networks, ultimately safeguarding lives and promoting stability in the region.
