A YEAR OF SILENCE, A YEAR OF BETRAYAL: HOW A FAKE “DEAF” INFORMANT FED KIDNAPPERS IN KEBBI
In a disturbing security revelation from Kebbi State, authorities have arrested a young man accused of spending an entire year pretending to be deaf while secretly serving as an informant for kidnapping gangs. By posing as someone living with a hearing impairment, he reportedly gained the trust and sympathy of residents, moving freely within the community without raising suspicion.
Security sources say he operated in Makera Gandu area of Birnin Kebbi, carefully observing daily routines and discreetly gathering intelligence on targeted individuals. His alleged role was not to carry out abductions himself, but to provide critical information that would enable criminal networks to strike with precision.
During interrogation, the boy reportedly confessed that he and two others were deployed for similar surveillance missions. He further claimed that those who trained them in sign language are based in Harasawa area within Birnin Kebbi, while he is originally from Niger State. The methodical planning behind the operation shows a troubling evolution in criminal tactics.
The incident has left residents shaken, exposing vulnerabilities in both community vigilance and security oversight. As criminal networks continue to exploit compassion and trust as operational tools, one pressing question remains: how long will criminals continue to manipulate our collective intelligence because of negligence within our communities and among the authorities?
