Lionel Messi has spent much of his career rewriting football history, but the 2026 World Cup has taken that to another level. Already the defining figure of Argentina’s 2022 triumph, Messi has continued to extend, and in some cases completely redefine, the record books during this tournament.

Now, after leading Argentina into the World Cup final again, this time against Spain, Messi’s legacy at the competition has reached unprecedented heights.

“Lionel Messi completed nine dribbles and assisted two goals against England – the first player on record (from 1966) to do so in a single FIFA World Cup knockout game.”

Messi became the first player in history to feature in six different World Cups, having now played in editions spanning from 2006 to 2026.

Messi is also the first man to play in SIX world cups. 20 years. 32 matches. 21 goals. 2 finals appearances. 1 trophy. The GOAT 🐐

The Argentina captain had already matched the record for most World Cup editions after being selected for Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. By featuring against Algeria in Argentina’s opening match of the 2026 tournament, Messi officially entered his sixth World Cup, a milestone previously unmatched in men’s football.

Before Messi, the record stood at five World Cups, shared by legends including Lothar Matthäus, Gianluigi Buffon and Rafael Márquez. Cristiano Ronaldo also reached six World Cups during the 2026 tournament, joining Messi in that historic group.

Most matches in World Cup history

Messi entered the 2026 tournament already holding the record for most World Cup appearances, having played 26 matches across his first five tournaments.

During Argentina’s run in 2026, he has continued extending that record. After appearing in the semifinal victory over England, Messi has played 33 World Cup matches, moving further clear of the previous benchmark held by Germany’s Lothar Matthäus, who finished his career with 25 appearances.

Most matches as captain

Messi has also extended his lead as the player with the most matches as captain in World Cup history.

Having already broken the record in 2022, he has added further captaincies during the 2026 tournament, moving well clear of former leaders such as Diego Maradona and Philipp Lahm. He has now catpained his country to three World Cup finals – in 2014, 2022, and 2026. His leadership role has remained central as Argentina made another deep run.

He is also the only player to register at least one assist in six different World Cups.

Most wins in World Cup history

Another major record to fall during the 2026 tournament was the number of World Cup match victories.

Before the tournament, the record belonged to Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who won 17 matches across his World Cup career. Messi surpassed that mark during Argentina’s 2026 campaign and has continued extending his lead. After Argentina’s semifinal victory over England, Messi has recorded 22 World Cup wins, the most in tournament history.
