LAGOS, NIGERIA — The organising secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Toba Ajiboye, has died following a suspected assassination attack in Lagos.
Ajiboye came under attack on Sunday night while returning from his childhood area in Fadeyi. According to reports, suspected gunmen intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road axis and opened fire, leaving the car riddled with bullets.
Photos and videos of the white vehicle, showing multiple bullet holes on the windscreen and bodywork, circulated widely on social media shortly after the incident.
Initial accounts suggested that Ajiboye and other occupants survived the shooting despite sustaining gunshot wounds. However, subsequent reports confirmed that the NURTW chieftain later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the transport sector in Lagos, where NURTW leaders have long been influential in union activities and local politics. NaijaChoice News gathered that security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the attack.
This latest killing underscores the persistent security challenges facing prominent figures within Nigeria’s transport unions, particularly in major commercial hubs like Lagos.
