Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has taken another major step toward expanding Nigeria’s industrial capacity after signing a $400 million equipment agreement with Chinese construction machinery giant XCMG.
The deal will support the expansion of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, with plans to increase its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to about 1.4 million barrels per day within the next three years.
If completed, the refinery will rank among the largest single site refining complexes in the world, rivaling India’s Jamnagar Refinery.
The refinery, which began operations in 2024, already supplies petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel to Nigeria while exporting refined petroleum products to several African countries, Europe, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. Earlier performance tests also showed the facility processing about 700,000 barrels per day, exceeding its official design capacity.
Beyond increasing fuel production, the expansion is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a regional energy hub, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, create more jobs, and boost foreign exchange earnings through exports.
The project also reflects China’s growing involvement in Africa’s industrial development, with Chinese firms increasingly supplying heavy equipment for large infrastructure and manufacturing projects across the continent.
Despite the optimism, challenges remain. The first phase of the refinery took over a decade to complete and faced funding delays, regulatory hurdles, and crude oil supply constraints. The success of this expansion will depend on maintaining adequate crude supply, stable policies, and strong export demand.
If successful, the project could permanently transform Nigeria from a major importer of refined fuel into one of the world’s leading refining and petroleum export hubs.
