I Reject The Concocted Results Of The ADC Presidential Primaries – Amaechi

Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has firmly rejected the results of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries held yesterday, citing widespread voter disenfranchisement that prevented a significant portion of party members from exercising their franchise.

The former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation described the announced outcomes as “concocted,” arguing they fell short of the free, fair, and transparent standards he had demanded from the outset. He insisted that accepting such results would undermine the very principles the ADC claims to represent.

Amaechi, a veteran politician with decades of experience across PDP and APC before joining the ADC, had positioned himself as a leading aspirant in the contest involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Reports from various states indicated chaotic processes, including allegations of irregularities, uneven delegate access, and logistical failures that left many registered members unable to vote.

Party insiders revealed that up to 80 percent of eligible members were reportedly shut out in several locations, raising serious questions about the credibility of the exercise. This comes amid existing fractures within the ADC, which has grappled with leadership disputes and parallel structures in recent weeks.

The development strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s opposition politics as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. With President Bola Tinubu seeking re-election under the APC amid persistent economic pressures, security challenges, and public discontent, many had hoped the ADC could emerge as a viable platform to consolidate opposition voices. Instead, the primaries have exposed deep organisational weaknesses in a party that positioned itself as an antidote to the “impunity and gross mismanagement” associated with the ruling party.

Amaechi’s stance highlights a recurring paradox in Nigerian politics: parties that sharply criticise the APC and INEC for electoral malpractices—vote buying, result writing, and disenfranchisement—risk losing moral authority when similar issues surface in their own processes. The ADC’s original appeal rested on offering an alternative rooted in genuine participation and accountability, particularly to amplify the concerns of ordinary Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines.

Context and Broader Implications

Amaechi’s political journey adds weight to his position. As a two-term governor who transformed Rivers State’s infrastructure and later oversaw major railway projects as Transportation Minister, he has often emphasised delivery and competence. His move to the ADC was seen by supporters as a strategic step to build a credible third force, especially after opposition coalitions involving figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso faced setbacks.

The timing is critical. Nigeria faces high inflation, youth unemployment, and infrastructure deficits that have fuelled demands for fresh leadership. A flawed primary in one of the emerging opposition parties could deepen public cynicism about the entire political class and fragment anti-incumbency votes in 2027.

Analysts note that credible internal democracy within opposition parties remains essential for building public trust. Without it, efforts to challenge the APC’s incumbency advantage may falter, regardless of individual candidates’ pedigrees.

This rejection by a prominent figure like Amaechi could trigger further realignments, legal challenges, or renewed negotiations within the ADC as it seeks to present a united front. It underscores the high stakes and persistent hurdles facing Nigeria’s opposition in forging a coherent alternative ahead of the polls.

The coming days will test whether the ADC can address these grievances and restore confidence in its processes, or if the cracks will widen further. For a nation yearning for accountable governance, the integrity of such exercises is not merely procedural—it defines the quality of choices available to voters.
