Wigwe’s Vast Offshore Empire Exposed: 80 Companies Across 20 Countries

The late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive of Access Holdings, built a sprawling corporate network spanning at least 80 companies in 20 countries, many registered in tax havens and shielded from public view during his lifetime.

Corporate filings, UK property registers, and records from Nigeria, Cyprus, the United States, Mauritius, the Isle of Man, and Jersey reveal an intricate web of real estate, investment vehicles, oil and gas interests, fintech platforms, and family structures. This comes more than two years after Wigwe, his wife Doreen, son Chizi, and two others died in a helicopter crash in California in February 2024.

Wigwe rose to prominence as one of Nigeria’s most influential bankers. Alongside lifelong partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, he transformed Access Bank from a mid-tier institution into a pan-African powerhouse following their 2002 acquisition. Under his leadership, the group expanded aggressively across Africa and the UK, reaching assets of N52.2 trillion by September 2025. Yet public attention remained largely on his banking role, while the full extent of his personal holdings stayed discreet.

Investigations show Wigwe held significant indirect stakes in Access Holdings, including through Mauritius-registered entities like Coronation Trustees Tengen Mauritius. As of December 2023, he controlled about 7.3 percent of the group directly and indirectly, with his total exposure valued at substantial sums amid Nigeria’s economic volatility. Tengen Family Office in Ikoyi, Lagos, jointly owned with Aig-Imoukhuede, served as a key wealth management vehicle, mirrored by similar structures in Mauritius.

In the United Kingdom, Wigwe’s interests included Lodging Holding Ltd and Carmel Gate Ltd, tied to real estate. A March report highlighted over 100 London properties linked to him through overseas entities, disclosures made possible only by the UK’s Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022. This register compelled foreign owners to reveal beneficial owners, piercing the veil of secrecy that had long allowed anonymous purchases in prime London markets.

Further entities surfaced in Cyprus (including Deansleigh Holdings, later re-registered in the UK), Jersey, and the Isle of Man, where structures date back to 2006. In the United States, Florida and Washington D.C. entities such as Beraug Investments LLC and Grosvenor Marine LLC involved family members. Within Nigeria, his portfolio covered construction firms like Fusion Construction Limited, oil and gas plays such as Petralon entities, fintech interests including Hydrogen Payment Services, and philanthropic bodies like the Africa Initiative for Governance.

These arrangements are common among high-net-worth individuals for estate planning, asset protection, and international diversification. Nigeria’s challenging business environment—marked by currency fluctuations, regulatory shifts, and infrastructure gaps—often encourages such global structuring. Wigwe’s model reflected the broader trend of Nigerian entrepreneurs leveraging offshore vehicles to manage risks while funding domestic growth.

The revelations also highlight ongoing family tensions. Reports indicate a dispute over estate distribution, with Wigwe’s father, Shyngle Wigwe, filing a caveat at the Lagos probate registry. An affidavit from a cousin reportedly challenges aspects of asset handling and guardianship roles involving Aig-Imoukhuede.

Wigwe’s death stemmed from a helicopter crash attributed by the US National Transportation Safety Board to pilot spatial disorientation after entering instrument meteorological conditions, compounded by operational safety shortcomings. The tragedy cut short a career that exemplified Nigeria’s banking consolidation era and the ambition of its private sector leaders.

This extensive network underscores the complexity of beneficial ownership in global finance, even for executives of systemically important institutions. It illustrates both the opportunities for sophisticated wealth building in Africa’s largest economy and the persistent challenges of transparency in cross-border dealings. As Nigerian regulators and international partners push for stronger disclosure standards, cases like this provide concrete context for ongoing reforms in corporate governance and anti-money laundering frameworks.

Herbert Wigwe’s hidden corporate universe reveals the quiet architecture behind one of Nigeria’s most visible banking success stories, offering a deeper glimpse into the intersection of personal enterprise, family legacy, and global capital flows.
