The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly dismissed claims of dual party membership involving its National Legal Adviser, Barrister Reuben Egwuaba, attributing the controversy to an administrative lapse by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party stated that Egwuaba formally resigned from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and his position as its National Legal Adviser in December 2025, long before assuming any role in the NDC. It released copies of his resignation letter to support this position and stressed there are no discrepancies in membership records or legal infractions.

The issue surfaced after a civil society group, the Nigeria Democratic Rights Advocacy (NDRA), raised concerns over INEC’s portal, which still listed Egwuaba as National Legal Adviser for both parties. One entry for the NDC carried the notation “by court order,” prompting questions about compliance with the Electoral Act’s prohibition on dual membership. Critics.

Our National Legal Adviser resigned from the APM since last year.

There is no discrepancy of membership or legal issues.

INEC just forgot to update APM’s details on their website.

See his letter of resignation from the party and as National Legal adviser attached.
