GOMBI, Adamawa State — The Adamawa Progressive Elders Council has strongly condemned the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists responsible for the killing of at least 29 people at a football match in Sabon Gari village.
The attack occurred on Sunday, April 26, in the Guyaku District of Gombi Local Government Area. Gunmen stormed the venue, firing indiscriminately at players and spectators before looting shops and setting structures ablaze, according to eyewitness accounts that reached community leaders.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Council’s chairman, Brig-Gen MB Marwa (rtd), described the assault as a barbaric and senseless act deliberately aimed at destroying the fragile peace returning to parts of the state. He said targeting innocent citizens enjoying a local sporting event represented a direct attack on the social bonds that hold Adamawa communities together.
The Elders Council commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his swift response, particularly his on-the-spot visit to the affected community and assurances of justice for the perpetrators alongside support for survivors. They also extended solidarity to the Traditional Ruler of Gombi, HRM Aggrey Bechour-Ali, for his efforts to stabilise the area after the tragedy.
The Council, through its Head of Media and Publicity, Ahmad I. Sajoh, called on residents across Adamawa to stay alert, work closely with security agencies, and reject any attempt to sow division.
NaijaChoice News understands that security forces have since stepped up patrols in the Gombi axis as they pursue the fleeing attackers.
This latest outrage underscores the persistent threat posed by ISWAP in parts of the Northeast and the urgent need for sustained community-security collaboration to protect lives and restore normalcy in vulnerable areas.
