VANCOUVER, Canada — The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has unanimously approved new Law amendments proposed by FIFA aimed at curbing discriminatory and inappropriate behaviour during matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decisions were taken at a special meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, following extensive consultations with stakeholders as directed by IFAB’s Annual General Meeting in February.
Under the new measures, competition organisers will have the discretion to issue a red card to any player who covers their mouth while confronting an opponent. The rule seeks to discourage hidden insults or discriminatory comments often shielded by this action.
Similarly, players who leave the field of play in protest against a referee’s decision risk being shown a red card. Team officials who incite such walkouts will also face the same sanction.
In addition, any team found responsible for causing a match to be abandoned will, in principle, forfeit the game.
These amendments will be formally communicated to all 48 participating teams in the coming weeks ahead of the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles, should they qualify for the expanded 2026 World Cup, will be expected to adhere strictly to the new rules, which reflect FIFA’s determination to promote discipline and fair play on the global stage.
The changes underscore growing efforts to sanitise the beautiful game as Nigeria and other African nations prepare for what promises to be the largest FIFA World Cup in history.
NaijaChoice News understands that these measures will be strictly enforced during the tournament.
The development highlights FIFA’s commitment to upholding the integrity of football as the world’s most popular sport enters a new era.
