ABUJA, Nigeria — Veteran coaches Samson Siasia and Daniel Amokachi have applied for the vacant head coaching position of Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles.
NaijaChoice News reports that the former Nigeria internationals are among those who have shown interest in the job, which became open following the exit of Salisu Yusuf.
Siasia, 58, brings a formidable pedigree to the race. The former Super Eagles striker and coach enjoyed two successful spells with the U-23 team. He famously guided the side to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China — Nigeria’s best-ever performance at the Games — and later delivered a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
His deep experience with the age-grade team, coupled with previous stints as Super Eagles and Flying Eagles handler, makes him one of the most qualified local coaches eyeing the role.
Amokachi, 53, also has history with the U-23 Eagles. The ex-Everton and Besiktas striker, popularly called “The Bull,” was appointed head coach of the team in 2006 during his early days in management. The Kaduna-born forward turned coach is seen as another strong contender with vast playing pedigree and familiarity with the national team setup.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently reviewing applications as it seeks a suitable replacement to steer the Olympic-bound team. The U-23 Eagles remain Nigeria’s primary pathway to the Olympic Games, and the next coach will be expected to build a competitive squad capable of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics while performing creditably at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
Both Siasia and Amokachi are respected figures in Nigerian football circles for their commitment to youth development and proven ability to deliver results on the biggest stage.
As the NFF continues its search for the right man to lead the Dream Team, football stakeholders are watching closely to see who will get the nod in what promises to be a keenly contested appointment.
