Ndume Eyes Fifth Term in Senate 2027

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, the outspoken lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, is eyeing a fifth term in the National Assembly in 2027, a public affairs analyst has revealed.

Babandi Shehu, a prominent public affairs analyst from Northeast Nigeria, made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday, saying the senator’s return enjoys massive grassroots support ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries slated for May.

According to Shehu, youths from the nine local government areas that make up Borno South Senatorial District – Biu, Hawul, Kwaya Kusar, Shani, Damboa, Chibok, Askira/Uba, Bayo and Gwoza – are already mobilising to secure the APC nomination ticket for Ndume.

The analyst described Ndume as more than just a senator but a nationalist whose fearless voice is needed at this critical stage of Nigeria’s political history.

“Ndume is not just a senator; he is a nationalist. At this stage of its political history, Nigeria needs senators like Ndume who fearlessly check the excesses of the executive and tell the truth to power, not minding whose ox is gored,” Shehu said.

NaijaChoice News reports that the development comes barely 48 hours after youth groups from the same nine LGAs raised N38.5 million to purchase expression of interest and nomination forms for Ndume’s fifth-term bid, signalling strong early momentum for his re-election.

The senator, who is currently serving his fourth term having first entered the Red Chamber in 2011, has remained one of the most vocal critics of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He was among the first lawmakers to raise the alarm over the country’s new tax laws, which are scheduled to begin implementation in January 2027.

Ndume has consistently argued that the tax reforms contain discrepancies between what the National Assembly passed and what was eventually signed into law, describing the process as faulty and calling for suspension of implementation pending proper investigation.

Political observers in Borno State believe Ndume’s track record of constituency projects, including the construction of 200 housing units for IDPs in Gwoza and 80 in Damboa, has endeared him to the people of Southern Borno, many of whom see him as a champion of good governance and accountability.

With the APC primaries just weeks away, analysts say the senator’s decision to seek another term could reshape the political landscape in the Northeast, especially given his influence and the growing youth support base.

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, all eyes remain on Borno South to see whether Ndume’s brand of bold representation will secure him a fifth trip to the Senate.
