Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, has been killed in a coordinated assault on military positions across the country.
Sources confirmed the death on Sunday following a suicide car bomb attack on his residence in the garrison town of Kati, about 15 kilometres northwest of the capital. The strike formed part of simultaneous operations launched on Saturday by fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front.
Camara was a central figure in the military government that took power after coups in 2020 and 2021. He played a key role in shaping security policy and was viewed by some as a potential future leader within the ruling junta.
The attacks targeted several locations, including areas in Bamako, the northern cities of Gao and Kidal, and the central town of Sevare. Reports indicate heavy gunfire and explosions continued in Kidal more than 24 hours after the initial strikes began.
Kati, long considered one of Mali’s most secure military zones, came under direct assault despite its fortifications. Analysts noted that the ability of the groups to penetrate such sites caught authorities off guard.
Interim President Assimi Goita was moved to a secure location during the offensive and remains in command, according to available information. The junta has faced growing pressure over the scale of the violence.
The African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the US Bureau of African Affairs issued condemnations of the attacks. Regional observers have linked the events to ongoing instability in the Sahel, where jihadist and separatist activities have persisted for years.
Nigeria and other West African nations continue to monitor developments closely, given the potential for spillover effects across shared borders and the broader ECOWAS region.
This development underscores the fragility of security arrangements in the Sahel and the complex alliances now forming among insurgent groups.
