ANAMBRA, NIGERIA — The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered a final verdict affirming the change of name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu, putting to rest long-standing disputes over the community’s identity.
The Umuchukwu Progressive Union (UPU) described the judgment as conclusive and irreversible, declaring that the apex court’s decision upholds the official government gazette recognising the new name.
Chief Adinchezor Chukwuemeka, President General of the UPU, said the ruling represents the highest legal authority on the matter and must be respected by all parties concerned.
“The verdict of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has come to stay. It is not subject to further debate or manipulation. Any attempt to return to the old name Nkerehi will fail because the law is clear and binding,” Chief Chukwuemeka stated.
He noted that the transition to Umuchukwu followed a democratic process, including a referendum that enjoyed overwhelming support from community members, and was validated through all levels of the judiciary.
On the traditional institution, the UPU reaffirmed the validity of the election of Kenneth Maduka as the Igwe of Umuchukwu.
According to Chief Chukwuemeka, the selection process adhered strictly to established guidelines and was conducted under the direct supervision of officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
“The election of Igwe Kenneth Maduka remains a settled matter. It was free, fair, and reflected the will of the people. The mandate given to him cannot be undermined,” he added.
The union warned residents to disregard what it called misleading narratives designed to sow confusion within the community.
It urged all stakeholders to rally behind the recognised leadership and focus on unity and development initiatives.
As one of the communities in Anambra State navigating issues of identity and traditional governance, Umuchukwu’s case highlights the role of judicial intervention in resolving local disputes in line with democratic and legal processes.
NaijaChoice News reports that with both the community name and traditional rulership now firmly settled by the Supreme Court, Umuchukwu stands better positioned for sustained peace and progress under its lawful institutions.
