EFCC Warns Nigerian Content Creators on Impersonation

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned Nigerian content creators to stop using its name, logo, or identity in skits, videos, and other digital productions without authorisation.

The anti-graft agency said such actions amount to misrepresentation and impersonation, which could lead to legal action, including prosecution. It described the warning as a necessary measure to stop misinformation and block fraudulent schemes that exploit its image.

EFCC officials stressed that unauthorised use of its branding undermines public trust in the commission’s work against corruption.

The directive has sparked debate across social media platforms. Supporters argue it is essential to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s key anti-corruption body, which many citizens look to for accountability in public life.

Others, however, fear the move might limit creative freedom in the country’s booming digital entertainment industry. Content creators often draw from real institutions to produce relatable satire that resonates with everyday Nigerians facing economic challenges.

Analysts noted that Nigeria’s fast-growing online space, driven by young talents in Lagos, Abuja, and other cities, frequently references public agencies to highlight social issues. They warned that strict enforcement could push creators to self-censor.

Stakeholders in the creative industry have called for clearer guidelines from the EFCC. They want a balanced approach that protects institutional identity without stifling digital expression.

NaijaChoice News observed that the conversation reflects broader tensions between regulation and innovation in Nigeria’s digital economy, where content creation has become a major source of livelihood for many youths.

As reactions continue to pour in, the EFCC maintained that its warning serves the public interest by preventing abuse of its authority.

The development underscores the delicate balance Nigeria must strike between curbing fraud and nurturing the creative talents powering the nation’s soft power.
