ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned President Bola Tinubu that distributing palliatives like rice, spaghetti and Indomie will not secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described such measures as temporary relief that cannot replace genuine public trust at the ballot box.
“Bags of rice, spaghetti, and Indomie may offer temporary relief, but they cannot secure legitimacy at the ballot box,” Atiku said.
The former Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate argued that the current administration is consolidating power while narrowing democratic space, even as it draws more state governors into its fold.
He noted that with over 30 governors now aligned with the ruling party, the visible anxiety towards opposition and the Nigerian electorate suggests fear rather than strength.
“At a time when over 30 state governors have been drawn into the ruling party’s orbit, Nigerians are witnessing a growing pattern of actions that suggest not strength, but fear—fear of credible opposition, fear of free competition, and fear of the Nigerian voter,” Atiku stated.
The PDP chieftain expressed concern over alleged manipulation of state institutions and judicial processes against opposition voices.
He pointed to what he described as confusing court outcomes and reckless detention orders targeting critics of the government.
“There is a growing resort to crass and reckless detention orders targeted at opposition figures,” he said.
Atiku warned that continued trends could push Nigeria towards a one-party system where elections become mere formalities without real competition.
He stressed that true leadership must rest on the will of the people, not institutional control or suppression of dissent.
As Nigeria prepares for the next general elections, NaijaChoice News understands that Atiku’s remarks have reignited debate on the health of the country’s democracy and the role of palliative measures in governance.
The former vice president urged citizens to stay vigilant, insisting that Nigerians deserve genuine choice at the polls rather than managed outcomes.
This latest intervention underscores the deepening political contestation as 2027 approaches, highlighting questions of legitimacy beyond temporary relief.
