ENUGU, Nigeria — The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, Yan Yuqing, has commended Governor Peter Mbah’s aggressive investment drive, describing Enugu State as a rising destination with strong potential for deeper economic ties between the two nations.
Yuqing led a high-powered delegation of Chinese business executives to Government House, Enugu, where she praised the state’s investor-friendly policies and conducive business environment.
The envoy noted that Enugu now stands out for its vitality, livability, and opportunities, positioning it as an attractive hub for foreign direct investment.
According to the Consul General, Governor Mbah’s focus on infrastructure, technology, and human capital development mirrors global best practices and provides a solid platform for sustainable growth.
“The governor’s vision for Enugu is both inspiring and practical. His commitment to infrastructure, technology, and human capital development provides a solid foundation for sustainable growth,” Yuqing said.
She added that earlier doubts about the possibility of a direct flight between Enugu and China have faded, describing it now as a realistic prospect that could materialise in the near future.
The Chinese diplomat highlighted the strengthening of Nigeria-China relations, especially after the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024.
She expressed confidence that Enugu would play a key role in advancing this cooperation, particularly in infrastructure, digital economy, vocational education, and cultural exchange.
Discussions are also ongoing for possible sister-city agreements between Enugu and selected Chinese cities, a move expected to boost economic and cultural links.
Yuqing particularly commended the cleanliness of Enugu city, describing it as quite livable and welcoming.
Governor Mbah, while receiving the delegation, reaffirmed the state’s openness to Chinese investors and airlines, stressing that Enugu has been deliberately made safe, clean, and business-friendly.
He disclosed plans to establish direct flight routes to major Chinese cities, including Guangzhou, following the concessioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the proposed construction of a modern cargo terminal.
Mbah also proposed the creation of a Chinatown District in Enugu, assuring the delegation of land allocation and full government support to encourage Chinese companies to establish headquarters and operations in the state.
The governor cited existing partnerships, including the Haier Group’s manufacturing facility for digital devices, solar equipment, and household appliances, which includes technology transfer and local workforce training.
He emphasised that ongoing reforms are aimed at easing doing business and ensuring long-term profitability for investors.
NaijaChoice News reports that these developments underscore Enugu’s growing profile as a preferred investment destination in Nigeria, with potential to strengthen South-East China economic cooperation.
The engagement signals a new phase in bilateral relations that could deliver tangible benefits for trade, infrastructure, and job creation in the region.
