FG Files 13-Count Treason Against Six Coup Plotters in Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six persons accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The defendants are retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, serving Police Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni and Abdulkadir Sani. They are accused of waging war against Nigeria, treason and acts of terrorism.

Court documents obtained by NaijaChoice News show the suspects allegedly conspired to topple the government through unlawful means. All six are in custody and will be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on Wednesday.

The case traces back to October 2025 when the government abruptly cancelled the 65th Independence Day military parade slated for October 1. Initial reports suggested the cancellation was tied to an alleged coup attempt.

The Defence Headquarters first dismissed the claims as unfounded. But on October 31, 2025, media outlets reported the arrest of 16 military officers in connection with the plot, while two others remained at large.

In January 2026, the DHQ confirmed that investigations had uncovered a genuine coup plot involving some personnel. The officers were to face military judicial panels, according to DHQ spokesman Samaila Uba.

Family members of the detained officers appealed to President Tinubu in March, demanding an open court trial and access to their relatives. They held a press conference in Abuja to press their case.

In April, the families protested at the entrance of the National Assembly, calling for a speedy trial and visitation rights. The latest charges now shift part of the matter to the civilian court.

Security analysts say the development underscores ongoing efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy amid regional instability. The case continues to draw attention across the country.
