Don’t Let Hardship Break Your Marriage – Leke Abejide, Lawmaker Warns Nigerians

ABUJA, Nigeria – Hon. Leke Abejide, member representing Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State and Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, has urged Nigerians not to allow the current economic hardship to destroy their marriages and families. He stressed that enduring homes are built on love, understanding and faith in God.

The lawmaker made the call on Sunday at a special thanksgiving service held at Christ Wisdom Gospel Church in Kubwa, Abuja. NaijaChoice News reports that the event celebrated the 50th birthday of his wife, Deaconess Esther Abejide, as well as their 20th wedding anniversary.

Abejide told the gathering that sustaining a successful marriage demands firm commitment to core values anchored on love and mutual respect. He cited the book of Ephesians Chapter 5, noting that the principle of husbands loving their wives and wives submitting to their husbands has sustained their own union.

He cautioned couples against letting financial strain weaken their relationships and urged them to remain resolute. The lawmaker observed that while many complain about the economy, signs of spending and investment remain visible across the country through new estates, house constructions, vehicle purchases and foreign travels.

Abejide advised Nigerians to make God the foundation of their homes. He added that with God in place, temporary hardship will not destroy families and things will eventually fall into place.

Deaconess Esther Abejide attributed the success of their two-decade marriage to love, patience and mutual understanding. She emphasised the role of faith, prayer and sacrifice in building a stable union.

“The secret is love and understanding. Couples must know what their partner likes and dislikes,” she said, adding that prayer and fasting will keep any marriage standing when God is at the centre.

Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West and chairs the Senate Committee on Services, expressed confidence in the direction of Nigeria’s economy under President Bola Tinubu. He called for patience, describing the reforms as a shift from a directionless economy to a more structured one.

The colourful event attracted political associates, family members and well-wishers. It ended with the donation of an 18-seater bus to the church by the celebrants.
