LAGOS, Nigeria – A frontline political scientist and public affairs analyst, Professor Udenta Udenta, has declared that a presidential ticket pairing Peter Obi of the South with any credible northern running mate will defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
NaijaChoice News reports that Udenta, founding national secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy, made the assertion as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme. He described the current political climate as ripe for a broad-based opposition alliance built on regional balance.
“Any pairing today, a Peter Obi in the South and anyone else in the North, will defeat Bola Tinubu in 2027,” Udenta said.
The professor identified Obi as the most visible opposition figure in southern Nigeria. He stressed that the choice of a northern partner remains critical for any coalition seeking victory at the polls.
Udenta argued that worsening economic conditions will shape voter decisions as the election draws closer. He pointed to growing public frustration with the Tinubu administration’s handling of daily living costs.
“For Nigerians to long for the Buhari presidency is indicative of the failures of the Tinubu-led government,” he noted.
Udenta asked Nigerians to compare the situation on May 29, 2023, when Tinubu took office, with the realities today. He insisted the answer is clear: living standards have deteriorated sharply.
The analyst dismissed government claims of macroeconomic gains, saying abstract figures on inflation or stability mean little to ordinary citizens. “It is hunger that will speak for them. What truly matters is the standard of living,” he added.
His comments come as opposition groups continue talks on forging a united front ahead of the 2027 polls. Analysts say such realignments could reshape the political landscape if economic hardship persists.
