Police operatives in Delta State have arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly attempting to transport illicit substances, including suspected cocaine, crystal methamphetamine (commonly called ice), and a potent strain of cannabis known as loud.
The arrest occurred during a routine stop by the Safer Highway Patrol team. Officers searched a Toyota Sienna bus driven by the suspect based on credible intelligence. They discovered the drugs cleverly concealed inside electric bulbs.
Spokespersons for the Delta State Police Command confirmed the recovery of 490 grams of a substance suspected to be cocaine and four grams of weeds suspected to be loud. A firearm linked to a murder case was also recovered from the vehicle during the operation.
NaijaChoice News gathered that the concealment method — hiding drugs in everyday items like bulbs — reflects growing sophistication among traffickers trying to evade checkpoints across Nigerian highways. Security sources say such tactics are becoming common on major routes in the South-South region.
Ice, a highly addictive form of methamphetamine, has raised fresh concerns among health experts and law enforcement. In recent months, NDLEA and police operations nationwide have highlighted its spread, especially among young people in urban areas. Users often describe intense euphoria followed by severe psychological effects, with many experts warning it is far more destructive than traditional cannabis.
The suspect is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court soon. Investigations continue to determine the source and intended destination of the consignment.
This latest bust underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt drug supply chains. Delta State has recorded several similar interceptions in recent times, as authorities intensify highway patrols and intelligence-led operations.
Residents have been urged to provide timely information to security agencies. The police say anyone found involved in the trafficking or distribution of hard drugs will face the full wrath of the law.
