The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to worry about a major defeat in the 2027 general elections. The party pointed to rising hardship and worsening insecurity as reasons millions of Nigerians may reject his re-election bid.
In a statement issued Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the President would face not just political rivals but ordinary citizens fed up with economic pain and daily threats to life. NaijaChoice News reports that the opposition was reacting sharply to Tinubu’s remarks a day earlier at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President had told coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors that he was not afraid of the opposition. He mocked the ADC’s recent national convention, describing it as “noise-making” and “rascality of street convention.”
The ADC called those comments unpresidential. It accused Tinubu of showing anxiety instead of leadership while the country battles real problems.
“What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens,” the party said.
Families are still reeling from historic cost-of-living pressures, food inflation, mounting debts and shrinking purchasing power. Yet, the ADC noted, the President chose to ridicule the opposition rather than focus on relieving citizens’ suffering.
Reports of children abducted from examination centres even circulated as the President spoke. The party said this highlights how insecurity now touches everyday Nigerian life while government attention appears elsewhere.
The ADC also rejected the claim that its convention took place on the street. It suggested the President may have received wrong information about the gathering.
The opposition further accused Tinubu of hypocritically courting supporters of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of the polls. It insisted the real battle in 2027 is against the frustration of ordinary Nigerians, not political opponents.
