A fierce political contest is shaping up in Delta North Senatorial Zone as the 2027 general elections draw closer. Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has thrown his hat into the ring, declaring his interest in the senatorial seat currently held by Senator Ned Nwoko. Both men now fly the All Progressives Congress flag, with Nwoko a long-standing party leader in the state and Okowa joining last year alongside Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Senator Nwoko moved swiftly to affirm his own ambition. Addressing journalists on Friday at the Asaba International Airport, he declared his readiness to seek re-election and keep representing the zone. He arrived alongside former Deputy Senate President Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who stood firmly by his side.
A large crowd of supporters turned out to welcome the senator, a scene he described as proof of the strong ties between him and the people of Delta North. The gathering reflected the deep-rooted loyalty many Anioma leaders and constituents still hold for his ongoing work in the National Assembly.
Nwoko pledged to rally support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid. He expressed confidence in the president’s leadership and the reforms already transforming the country at the national level.
The senator cautioned constituents against any return to what he termed “old politics.” He urged them to stay committed to progressive governance that delivers real dividends.
On the sensitive issue of Anioma State creation, Nwoko aligned himself with the position taken by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He described Akpabio’s stance as the official position of the Senate on the matter.
Nwoko also disclosed fresh plans to upgrade the Federal College of Education, Asaba, into a full federal university. He described the project as a strategic step to expand access to higher education and accelerate development across the nine local government areas of Delta North.
NaijaChoice News notes that the emerging face-off between these two APC heavyweights has already set tongues wagging in Delta. With Okowa’s recent declaration and Nwoko’s firm response, the zone is bracing for what could become one of the most closely watched intra-party battles ahead of 2027.
