Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced the development in a statement on Friday. NaijaChoice News reports that the National Assembly passed the budget on March 31 after Tinubu requested an upward review of ₦9.81 trillion from the original ₦58.47 trillion estimate presented to lawmakers in December 2025.
The new budget earmarks ₦4.79 trillion for statutory transfers and ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing. It also sets aside ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent expenditure while dedicating ₦32.2 trillion to capital projects through the development fund.
With capital spending now accounting for nearly 50 per cent of the total, the allocation signals stronger push for infrastructure, national security and economic growth. Onanuga noted that the budget reflects the administration’s commitment to stability and improving living standards for Nigerians.
Tinubu equally signed the Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Amendment Bill 2026, extending the 2025 budget implementation deadline. The capital component, previously due to end on March 31, now runs till June 30, 2026.
The extension will give Ministries, Departments and Agencies enough time to finish critical infrastructure projects at advanced stages. It is expected to boost project completion rates and ensure better value for every naira spent.
The 2026 Appropriation Act took effect on April 1. The Federal Government will now roll out full implementation in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tinubu has directed all MDAs to focus on disciplined, transparent and efficient spending. He stressed value for money and timely delivery of projects across the country.
The President also called for sustained collaboration between the executive and legislature to drive national development. He assured Nigerians of deeper fiscal reforms, better revenue generation and targeted investments in jobs and social protection.
