Kenyan detectives arrest Nigerian in Sh30m heroin bust as Coast crackdown intensifies
Kenyan authorities have arrested a Nigerian national in Mombasa during a major anti-narcotics raid targeting an international heroin syndicate.
The operation, involving detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Transnational Organized Crime Unit, took place in the Musufini area of Kadzandani, Nyali. Officers recovered heroin with a street value of Sh30 million, roughly N300 million, described as one of the significant seizures in the region recently.
NaijaChoice News gathered that the suspect, Chimezie Emmanuel Okwara, aged 40, was picked up from his residence in an intelligence-led swoop. Sources close to the probe say he is suspected to be a central figure linking foreign suppliers with local facilitators handling storage, movement and distribution along the Coast.
Follow-up operations have already begun, with investigators expecting more arrests as they dismantle the network.
The suspect will be arraigned in court shortly, where detectives plan to ask for more time to trace the drugs’ supply chain and origin.
The development throws fresh light on the Indian Ocean corridor’s role as a major entry point for heroin trafficked into East Africa. Kenyan security agencies have stepped up patrols and raids in the Coast region over the past months amid a noticeable rise in narcotics cases.
Officials say the renewed push is aimed at traffickers, their local partners and the financiers behind the trade. The focus extends to curbing the ripple effects of drug abuse, violence and money laundering that continue to threaten stability.
Analysts monitoring the situation note that such syndicates exploit the region’s porous ports and shipping routes. Nigerian nationals have featured in several similar transnational cases across Africa in recent years, drawing attention back home.
With Okwara now in custody and investigations widening, authorities in Kenya insist more breakthroughs are coming.
