The single non-renewable four-year term for the Inspector-General of Police has been officially gazetted. This is contained in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette for December 2025.
The development came to light during the official presentation of the Nigeria Police Force Regulations. Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, representative of the police reform committee, explained the key highlights.
According to him, the IGP will operate under a single term and receive advice from deputy inspectors-general through state commissioners of police. This puts an end to the prolonged debate on the legality of the four-year tenure, which was a major issue under former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
In addition, the new rules completely ban the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and any form of torture by the police.
Officers are mandated to wear body cameras in high-risk operations. All personnel must also undergo training on human rights, ethics, and contemporary tactical methods.
While handing over the regulations to IGP Olatunji Disu, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Dr. Ibrahim Gaidam said they provide clear guidelines. He added that the changes will strengthen institutional responsibilities and bring the Nigeria Police in line with international standards.
The minister revealed that the regulations are the outcome of broad stakeholder consultations. These included the United Nations Development Programme, Police Service Commission, CLEEN Foundation and others.
The IGP pledged full compliance with the new regulations. He noted that they will assist the force in carrying out its mandate more effectively.
Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, described the regulations as more than mere guidance. He said they define standards, reinforce discipline and create a consistent framework across the force. This, he added, will allow the NPTF to better channel investments into training, infrastructure and welfare.
