2027: Nobody Can Match My Plans For The North — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential aspirant and former Labour Party standard bearer, has boldly declared that no other 2027 contender can rival his vision for turning Northern Nigeria into the country’s economic engine room.

The former Anambra State governor made the assertion during a Prime Time interview on Arise Television, which NaijaChoice News monitored on Monday night. Obi insisted he would directly tackle the North’s challenges without relying on the backing of influential northern political figures.

“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North. We will change the North. Our greatest asset as a country is in the North. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil,” he said.

He painted a clear picture of the transformation he has in mind. Obi pointed to the region’s vast uncultivated land as Nigeria’s untapped future, stressing that deliberate investment in agriculture must begin immediately to generate revenue that dwarfs current oil earnings. According to him, the North holds the key to national prosperity if its enormous agricultural potential is harnessed properly.

The ADC chieftain listed agriculture, education and health as the critical areas that would pull millions out of poverty and restore security. “If we want to secure the North today, we need to invest in those critical areas — agriculture, education and health — and that we can do,” he added.

Obi also used the platform to address the state of Nigeria’s democracy. He called on the government to stop weakening opposition parties and instead protect and strengthen them for the good of the country.

“The government should protect the opposition. In fact, they should make opposition stronger and make it work,” Obi stated. He warned that the 2027 election would pit the government in power against the people, adding that a strong, united opposition coalition was necessary to defend democracy and prevent a slide into one-party dominance.

Political observers note that Obi’s latest comments come as opposition leaders intensify efforts to build a formidable front ahead of the 2027 polls. Several northern stakeholders have already thrown their weight behind the ADC platform, with talks of broad alliances gaining momentum.

The former governor, who recently moved from the Labour Party to the ADC, has consistently emphasised performance over sentiment. He has repeatedly urged Nigerians not to vote along ethnic or religious lines but to focus on competence and results.

With less than a year to the next general elections, Obi’s direct appeal to the North signals a strategic push to expand his support base beyond his traditional strongholds in the South-East and among the youth nationwide. His message is clear: the North is not a political bargaining chip but the foundation upon which a new, productive Nigeria can be built.
