Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has drawn a firm line against the United States, warning that his country will fight any military move by President Donald Trump.
He made the declaration during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, insisting there is no justification for American aggression or any attempt to remove him from office.
“If that happens, there will be fighting, and there will be a struggle, and we will defend ourselves, and if we need to die, we’ll die, because as our national anthem says, ‘dying for the homeland is to live,’” Díaz-Canel said through a translator.
The tough talk comes as Cuba battles a severe energy crisis. Since December, the US has enforced a blockade around Venezuela under Operation Southern Spear, cutting off oil supplies that the island nation depends on heavily.
Power blackouts, fuel shortages and disrupted services have worsened daily life for millions of Cubans.
NaijaChoice News understands the Trump administration has privately told Cuban officials that Díaz-Canel must step aside before any real talks can begin, according to reports by The New York Times.
The Cuban leader, the first outside the Castro family to head the country since the 1959 revolution, has rejected the demand outright.
He described Cuba as a sovereign state that will not bow to external pressure.
The standoff has drawn attention across Africa. In Nigeria, the Cuba Solidarity Movement recently held a national conference under the banner “Cuba Has the Right to Live,” where leaders including Femi Falana (SAN) urged African countries to support the island and even consider selling oil to ease the blockade.
Many Nigerians remember Cuba’s long history of medical aid and training programmes that have benefited the continent.
As tensions rise, observers say the situation could affect regional stability and global energy flows.
Cuba produces only about 40 per cent of its fuel needs and has relied on Venezuelan shipments for years.
Díaz-Canel has made it clear his government remains united and prepared to resist.
For now, the island waits to see how far the Trump administration will push its pressure campaign.
