Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the assassination of Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as Yinka Agali.
The suspected leader of the Buccaneers confraternity, also known as Brothers Across Nigeria (BAN), was killed on Saturday night, April 11, 2026, in the Iponri area of Surulere.
NaijaChoice News gathered that Agali, regarded as a highly influential figure in the group within the Shitta/Akere axis, was attacked while driving along the Iponri axis near the National Stadium Bridge.
Some accounts point to ongoing rivalry between rival cult groups, while others link the killing to political motives as local elections draw closer. Social media videos have circulated claiming ties between the deceased and the All Progressives Congress (APC), though these remain unverified.
The Lagos State Police Command said it received a report of gunfire around 11:30 p.m. A patrol team from the Surulere Division rushed to the scene and found Agali inside an unregistered white Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains were later deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi disclosed that the attackers abandoned an unregistered black Ford Edge at the scene before escaping in another vehicle. Both vehicles have since been recovered.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. The family of the deceased has retrieved the body and indicated it would not pursue the case further.
The killing has heightened tension in parts of Surulere, with residents expressing fears of possible reprisals.
