Social media platforms are awash with claims that a vehicle in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s convoy rammed into residents in Obogoro community, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Friday.
Eyewitnesses say the incident happened as the presidential entourage left after the inauguration of three legacy projects by Governor Douye Diri. Videos trending online, including one posted on YouTube by 3MinRadar, show damaged vehicles and a crowd gathered at the scene. Some posts allege that three people lost their lives.
NaijaChoice News however can confirm that no official statement has come from the Presidency, Bayelsa State Government, or the Nigeria Police Force confirming any deaths.
A local outlet, Rivers Mirror, reported that three persons sustained injuries when the convoy hit residents and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. Their identities are yet to be released publicly.
The President had visited the state to address security challenges and commission key infrastructure projects. His convoy, which included a heavy security presence, moved through communities already tense from the closure of Swali Market and other areas for the visit.
Separate videos from the same day captured military and naval personnel attached to the entourage trading punches in public view, further raising questions about coordination during the high-profile movement.
As at press time, the Presidency is yet to issue any statement on the reported accident. Residents of Obogoro have expressed anger over what they describe as reckless driving by escort vehicles.
