Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has openly endorsed Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the next Governor of Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Friday, April 10, 2026, Faleke urged supporters in Ikeja and across Lagos to back Hamzat for the 2027-2035 term. He made the call as political parties gear up for primaries expected to begin next month.
The endorsement comes at a time when the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos is preparing for what promises to be a keenly contested race to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Several names have been mentioned in political circles, but Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2019, continues to attract significant attention.
Faleke, a four-term federal lawmaker known for his grassroots mobilisation in Ikeja, described the move as a strategic push for continuity and experienced leadership. He prayed for divine backing, adding “IJN. Amen!” at the end of his message.
Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, an engineer by training with a PhD in systems engineering, brings a strong technocratic background to the race. Born in 1964 into a prominent Lagos family, he previously served as Commissioner for Science and Technology and later for Works and Infrastructure under different administrations. His supporters point to his role in key state projects and steady presence in the Sanwo-Olu administration as proof of readiness for the top job.
Political observers note that the Lagos APC has historically favoured consensus arrangements, though recent signals suggest direct primaries could play a bigger role in 2027. Reports in the last few weeks have listed Hamzat among leading contenders, alongside figures like former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and others. No final decision has been announced by the party’s leadership or the Governor’s Advisory Council.
Faleke’s backing is seen as important because of his influence in Ikeja and his track record of delivering for his constituency through projects like solar streetlights and empowerment programmes. His call targets not just party faithful but the broader electorate in Lagos State.
As the countdown to the primaries intensifies, stakeholders expect more endorsements and realignments in the coming weeks. The race for the APC ticket is already generating heated debates about zoning, competence, and loyalty within the ruling party.
