Hansi Flick has explained why Barcelona lost the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final to Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants went down 2-0 at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday night, with Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth scoring for the visitors.
The Barcelona manager told reporters after the game that his team simply lacked fortune on the night. He pointed to defensive errors on the opening goal and the impact of a red card that handed Atletico a dangerous free-kick. “On the first goal, we needed to defend much better, and the red card led to a free-kick goal. We could’ve done better,” Flick said.
Despite the setback, Flick insisted his players gave their all even after going down to ten men. “We played well in the first and second half, even with a player less. We gave everything, but today luck was not on our side,” he added. He stressed the tie is far from over.
“It’s not over yet. We’ll try, we’ll fight. The semi-final might seem far away now, but we’ll try to be there,” the German coach declared.
NaijaChoice News reports that the result has left Barcelona with a tough task in the second leg at the Metropolitano. Nigerian fans, who stayed up late to watch the tie, will be hoping for a strong comeback from the Blaugrana when the two sides meet again. The quarter-final remains alive, and both clubs know anything can happen in Madrid.
